Universidad de los Andes, United States
Simón Cardona is a graduate student in the Master’s program in Water Resources at Universidad de los Andes, within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research focuses on the generation of microplastics in water distribution systems, particularly under hydraulic stress conditions such as water hammer. Simón is developing and validating a laboratory prototype designed to simulate hydraulic transients in drinking water pipelines, allowing him to study factors such as pressure magnitude, event duration, and material composition on microplastic generation. His findings contribute to understanding the mechanical processes behind microplastic contamination and provide insights for improving water treatment technologies and regulatory standards, with the ultimate goal of enhancing drinking water safety and quality. Through this research, Simón is addressing critical environmental challenges and contributing to the development of more sustainable and resilient water management practices.
