Professor of Engineering Practice Purdue University, Washington, United States
In the face of unrelenting change in technology and societal demands for engineering expertise, the entire engineering profession must come together to prepare the next generation of engineers who will solve the challenges of tomorrow. The shifts necessary to prepare the next generation will not occur naturally or quickly. This session focuses on current and future efforts that will best prepare future civil engineers. The Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge (CEBOK) was developed by ASCE to leverage generations of essential lessons and preserve the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to exercise responsible charge in the practice of civil engineering. This session will explore how learning about great civil engineering projects can be used as a tool for educators, mentors, and students to ensure students’ preparation for a successful career in civil engineering.
This session will present actionable ideas for civil engineering practitioners, managers, and educators who can join the effort to better prepare the next generation of civil engineers to solve the challenges of tomorrow.
Participants will: • Identify the challenges facing educators and employers in the civil engineering profession in educating future civil engineers. • Understand the CEBOK and how historical technical, professional, and personal lessons can reinforce the importance of the CEBOK journey and life-long learning. • List and explain key motivators and messages for attracting students to study engineering. • Recognize opportunities for partnerships between industry, K-12 schools, and universities to personalize learning for students.
