Dr. Steve Burian is a Professor of Hydrology and Water Resources in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alabama and serves as the Director of Science at the Alabama Water Institute. He spearheads multi-disciplinary water initiatives in research, education, and community engagement. His research focuses on mitigating risks from floods, improving water system performance, and protecting clean water. Using computer modeling, hydroinformatics, and systems analysis, his group enhances urban water infrastructure, collaborating with stakeholders like the Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities. Dr. Burian incorporates project-based learning in courses such as Water Resources Planning and Sustainable Urban Water Engineering. An advocate for educational advancement, he has mentored thousands of faculty globally through programs like the Wasatch Experience and Pakistan’s National Faculty Development Program. For his contributions to higher education in Pakistan, he was awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2019 by the President of Pakistan.
