Brent Travis is the Director of Applied Research at WEST Consultants, with 30 years of experience in research and engineering. Brent is the author of more than 30 research papers including numerous peer reviewed historical analyses. These publications include a statistical analysis of 301 bank failures, pipe roughness estimation by analysis of historical measurements, and machine learning analysis of large data for vortex prediction. For his Ph.D. dissertation he analyzed historic information in conjunction with nonlinear optimization to develop optimal dam release scheduling in the Grand Canyon. At WEST, Brent has led numerous high-profile projects with key historical aspects, including a forensic analysis of a major gas pipeline rupture in the Yellowstone River, a retrodictive analysis of storm flows in Hawaii, and a critical comparison of hydrologic predictions versus measurements for a large southwest flood control district. He has contributed to seven different books and manuals and is the lead instructor of the ASCE national Streambank Stabilization course.
