The e-Favor Modeling Approach for Detecting Water Leakage in Water Distribution Systems

Water distribution systems (WDS) are essential for global water supply but face significant challenges from water losses due to leaks, which contribute to Non-Revenue Water (NRW) and cause economic and environmental issues. Traditional leak detection methods are often costly, labor-intensive, and reliant on extensive sensor networks, making them impractical in regions with limited resources. The e-Favor modeling approach addresses these limitations by combining hydraulic modeling and engineering techniques to efficiently pinpoint leaks. Integrating model-based and data, e-Favor performs effectively even with incomplete or noisy data. By leveraging flow and pressure data along with system-specific parameters, it identifies leaks while reducing manual intervention and operational costs through automation. This study explores existing leak detection techniques and introduces the e-Favor approach, highlighting its applications in diverse scenarios. The tool’s effectiveness will be demonstrated through illustrative hypothetical case studies, showcasing its potential to enhance water loss management in WDS.
